Breed description.

The Kuvasz.

The Kuvasz is a Hungarian Shepard dog. The other Hungarian Shepard dogs are the Komondor, the Puli, the Pumi and the Mudi.

The Kuvasz is one of the Mountain Dogs. Most of them are white, sometimes with small coloured parts. Their job was to protect flocks of cattle against robbery by two- of four-legged individuals.

The Mountain Dogs are all large, self-conscious and remarkably quiet dogs. Members of this group are:

1. Polish Owczarek Podhalanski (Tatra)

2. Hungarian Kuvasz

3. Italian Maremma

4. Pyrenean Mountain Dog

5. Slovakian Cuvac

The Komondor is also a member of this group. His coat, also long at the face and completely felted, will make it impossible to confuse him with the other members.

Some of the non-white Mountain Dogs are the Portuguese Cão da Serra da Estrela, the ex-Yugoslavian Sarplaninac and the Russian Caucasian Owcharka.

There are also Mountain Dogs from Greece, Romania, Turkey and other countries. Most of them are not recognized internationally.
